HI,

I am based in Charleston, and I love seeing the world in new ways through art and culture. In 2020, what started as an attempt to reorganize decades of travel content — I-phone photos, physical journals, airplane napkins noted with directions and memories — lead to this digital project. ‘Away’ is simply a distillation of a life passion that has taught me a lot about the world and, mostly, a lot about myself.

Travel is a lot of things to me. I believe a sequence of life experiences is as essential as my DNA strand - people, places and things that weave the fiber of who I am and how I engage with the world. Travel is a Teacher that dissipates judgement and reminds us we are all here together and we really do want the same things: our health, love and safety of family, liberty to choose a higher being and a safe place to call home. The mechanics of travel can be challenging shifts and pivots - late flights, canceled hotel rooms and non-appealing food options — forcing us to improvise, to keep our bearings and to move forward — literally.

Expect some ideas on cultural experiences, yoga spots, and cafes suitable to meet a new friend or fellow traveler, to journal and to get a caffeine fix. Not to mention some tips and mechanics about life on the go, sometimes in a foreign, non-English speaking land — with only a backpack and passport in hand.

Stay curious, Rebekah Jacob
